How Reflection Can Flip The Script

Creating a mindset that moves you to see the positive things in life is a skill set.

Skills are our “tools” that help us pull the proverbial nails out of a flat tire of life, sort of speak.

How do you cultivate the “mindset”? Well, let me paint you the picture. Remember to always shadow the best to be the best. When you find yourself with the worst- how can you shadow greatness? Been there too.

I have been flipping scripts since childhood. Racist scripts, sexist scripts, character-damaging scripts. I have created my “Flipping the script” into 4 actions: PMCS. Preventative, Maintenance, Checks and Services.

Military friends- don’t roll your eyes just yet! It’s gonna get good, hang tight. My 13 years of service showed me that we have PMCS guides, but on a unit level (your respective home unit, work environment, friendships- errrrrthang you touch) YOU CAN AMEND AS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE MISSION, righttttt?

Non-military friends- don’t worry, I have THE BLACK MAMBA to speak the same vibes. Let me share MY experience- then Kobe Bryant’s point of view.

Takeaways will be:

How to prevent chaos before it starts. 🤓

How to maintain Perspective.😎

How to push through in the hands times with a plan of action.🫡

RECAP and learn. 🫠🧐

What the heck did I just say? You can make ANYTHING your own flavor babyyyyy.

Starting a new job?

Is it all toxic environment and micromanagyyy? It’s ok- observe how they run things; give yourself time to OBSERVE them in their natural habitat. Lol

Gather your information, maintain good ideas/processes, CHECK on how you can improve any flaws but with other leadership in a brainstorm session), review protocols REGULARLY. Stuff works one week and then it doesn’t so be FLEXIBLE.

I like weekly check-ins for work, daily check-ins for boundaries (who's not playing nice in the sandbox and whyyyyyy), and monthly check-ins about the big stuff: budgets, staffing, what metrics went up or down and why. What are the trends you see in one month or 6 months?

But the beautiful thing? YOU DECIDE what gets checked the most often. So list the important things and assign them a check-in date. Make them accountable to YOU.. shape up workflow or beat it.

I used this style bc it feels the most genuine to me. Feel free to paraphrase or rephrase altogether.

✨HOW TO LFIP THE SCRIPT: j’s method. 🖤

  1. Preventative ACTIONS.

  2. Can you improve on efficiency? (CHECKS)

  3. Set the Standard. (SERVICES)

  4. Maintenance actions.

How DO I fight? How do I prevent, maintain, check, and SET THE STANDARD for myself? Well, it’s a lot more ambiguous when you have *inserts excuse here* right? Or is it? Once I started to synonymously use the PMCS method on EVERYYYYYYTHANG ouuuu I got a lot more CREATIVE, enthusiastic, and calmer about how I run things.

Ok ok let’s take a real-life example to illustrate how to MAGNIFY the nuances of HOW to custom tailor this for YOUR areas of improvement- we all got ‘em so let’s jump in!

Example: I took a sabbatical leave during a turbulent time in my life. I FELT I many negative assumptions (things you're not really sure about but you KNOW you would prefer to avoid) .. about- my work, social life, and myself.

My thought life was a wreck and needed to regain control- this feels like trying to capture FOG.

I was lost, desperate, and at the end of my rope. I knew if I didn’t figure out how to change my situation; I could make a sharp turn into the pit of despair and j ain’t going there.

Well, I went there and hung out 1 star out of 5 only because I can’t give Zero stars lol. Don’t recommend self-pity but hey- it happens. Just DON’T live there.. But everyone does from time to time🫣😅. Chances are you might relate.

Get back to basics: GOAL/intention SETTING.

LISTEN, I know how that sounds. “Easier said than done J”.

But Kobe Bryant’s, the Black Mamba- he understood the value of goals. Watch his interview with Jay Shetty below.

His takeaways:

1.LOOK LONGTERM.

I wanted to give up on my career because I thought all the negative things. “Your not smart enough, you’re a woman in a male dominated environment, you lack the intelligence, you… blah blah blah”. INACCURATE! Maybe RIGHT NOW I’m not feeling confident- why? Balance needed to be restored for me to get back to my A game. That’s all- but I DIDN’T understand that just yet. I made time to sit and think about “what would my best scenario for _____ be?”

2. BE CONSISTENT.

Kobe lays it out so simple but its taxing just to hear the need of “Monday get better, Tuesday you get better, Wednesday you.. then its 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7-10 years until you FINALLY get to where you wanna go”. Let that sink in. Are you prepared to STAY IN YOUR practice phase or you ready to step onto that stage and OWN IT?

3. BE OBSESSED.

“Obsessiveness comes from something that you LOVE.. when you really love it , you’ll go through fire for it, you go through the ups and downs for it. YOU just keep at it bc you love it so much.” – KOBE BRYANT.

4. ITS OK TO FAIL.

“That doesnt just mean basketball, that means- writing, I mean, thats being an entrepreneur -that means, having a confidence to go for it. It’s about the metaphor that sports have for life.”

“It’s the greatest metaphor we have..”

Kobe goes on to say:

“In sports you have to apply in the here in and NOW. Your faced with challenges moment to moment, your faced with pressures and anxieties. Communication or the lack there of -and all this other stuff. Its IN THE MOMENT -so you have to live it- when you practice those things, you get better at it.”

Last tip on flipping your script: surround yourself with people who are loyal and who you trust. Hindsight is a great teacher- learn the lesson and move on. The past cannot change, YOU can. Don’t be disheartened when relationships (platonic, romantic or any other kind) don’t work out.

Ask yourself- “what did this situation teach me, how did it improve my ability to spot the inconsistencies, how can I be able to spot it when happening IN THE MOMENT???”.

That- THAT awareness in REAL TIME, that’s where we evolve, elevate and become more powerful within.
